In 2020, Nike took over as the official uniform and footwear supplier of Major League Baseball (source). Prior to Nike, Majestic had been the official uniform provider. Even though the new Nike jerseys are relatively similar to the old Majestic jerseys, there are small differences in design and fit.
If you are looking to buy a new Nike MLB jersey, you are probably wondering what exactly those size differences are. Do Nike MLB jerseys run big or small? How do Nike MLB jerseys compare to Majestic?
Let’s take a closer look at the new Nike MLB jerseys (including photos of the jersey I own), and also discuss how they differ from the Majestic jerseys.
How Do Nike MLB Jerseys Fit?
In general, MLB jerseys run slightly bigger than normal clothing. This was the case for the Majestic jerseys under the previous apparel contract. This is done to mimic the loose, baggy nature of the jerseys the players wear. But what about the new Nike jerseys? Do Nike jerseys run big or small?
Do Nike MLB Jerseys Run Big or Small?
The new Nike MLB jerseys run a bit big, although my recommendation is to order your normal sizing. For me personally, the jerseys don’t run so big that I have to size down. Just don’t expect a tight fit when you order it.
Although the Majestic jerseys also ran big in comparison to normal clothing, in my experience, you can expect the new Nike MLB jerseys to actually be a touch bigger than the Majestic jerseys of old.
I wear a size 44, which according to the official size guide is a large equivalent. Here is how the size 44 fits me (6’3″ 190):
As you can see, the size 44 has plenty of length for me at 6’3″ tall. Overall, again, expect baseball jerseys to have a little extra room built in to sizing. I personally do not size down.
Nike vs Majestic MLB Jerseys
The description for the Nike jerseys at MLBShop.com calls the fit for the Nike authentic MLB jerseys an “athletic fit”, but the tag attached to my jersey when I bought it said “standard fit”. It’s hard to know exactly what that is supposed to mean, so let’s just take a look at how the new authentic Nike MLB jerseys compare directly to the old Majestic MLB jerseys.
Nike vs Majestic
Below is a look at my old size 44 authentic Majestic Trout jersey sitting on top of my new size 44 authentic Nike Yelich jersey:
As you can see, the new Nike MLB jerseys are sized just a little bit bigger than the old Majestic jerseys. The sleeve length is basically the same, but there seems to be a little more length in the Nike jersey, and a bit more space through the stomach area.
Overall though, the sizing of the Nike vs Majestic MLB jerseys is relatively similar, and if you owned a Majestic jersey, I would recommend ordering your same size in the Nike jerseys. Types of Nike MLB Jerseys
Under the new apparel contract, Nike makes both an Authentic and Replica MLB jersey. Just like the Majestic jerseys of old, these two types of jerseys offer two different price tiers from which to choose from. The authentic jerseys will be the closest to what the players wear on the field.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the features of the authentic Nike MLB jerseys.
Authentic Nike MLB Jersey Features
One thing we should note right out of the gate about the new Nike jerseys (in comparison to the old Majestic jerseys) is the new Nike jerseys have the Nike logo stitched to the front chest:
The old Majestic jerseys just had the Majestic logo stitched to the left sleeve and had a clean front of the jersey. So expect your Nike jersey to have the brand logo stitched to the front.
The Nike jerseys are made with 100% polyester, which has a nice lightweight fit against the shoulders. The jersey itself has a breathable feeling when you wear it, and is made with moisture-wicking fabric. Here is a close-up look at the fabric of these new MLB Nike jerseys:
The Nike Authentic MLB jerseys have the breathable side panels that help air circulate. The authentic Majestic jerseys also had the breathable side panels, which help the players on the field control body temperature:
Of course the authentic Nike jerseys also feature the stitched-on graphics, including names, numbers, and logos:
The back collar features the MLB Batterman logo patch, which is also stitched on:
And just like the authentic Majestic jerseys, the new authentic Nike MLB jerseys have the mesh paneling on the back side of the jersey below the belt. I believe the Majestic jerseys called this an “Air Belt”. This was part of the modifications made to MLB jerseys in 2016 from input by the players. This mesh paneling helps reduce body heat for the players. Here is a look at that paneling on the Nike Authentic MLB jerseys:
In conclusion, expect the new Nike MLB jerseys to run just a touch bigger than the old Majestic jerseys. Many of the same features that were part of the Majestic jerseys are part of the new Nike jerseys. Nike is adding the brand patch to the front chest, and with the switch to Nike, many teams are releasing new jersey designs. My recommendation is to order the same sizing your ordered for the old Majestic jerseys.
